Is the iPhone the ultimate gadget? There are lots of people who think that Apple has effectively cornered the gadget market with a single device. True believers are convinced that nothing else comes close, and if anything ever does, Apple will make it.

I not one of the faithful, but I have to admit that it is a very versatile phone. And with the number of things that it does, it’s amazing that it does them all quite well. Go back in time five or ten years, it would be difficult to even conceive of a device like the iPhone.

What makes iPhone the ultimate gadget? Let’s take a look:

First of all, it is a mobile phone, and fills that niche very well.
With all of its apps, including calendaring and organization function, it easily surpasses the capabilities of PDAs available just a few years ago.
The iPhone is an ebook reader, with excellent visibility for PDF books and reports.

You can browse the web at a level far above any seen before in mobile phones. This is proper internet, not some crippled mobile version.
It’s email in the palm of your hand.
You can access databases, documents and spreadsheets, and then go on to alter them and distribute them to your team.
How about a translator? There are applications that transform the iPhone into a trusted assistant with a gift for languages.

In fact, iPhone applications continue to expand the possibilities of what this device can do. And perhaps that’s what makes it the ultimate gadget of all. We actually don’t know everything it can do yet, because by using apps, the iPhone reinvents itself and takes on the functions you need.

There are many imitators and a few contenders, but no device has yet captured the gadget crowd as well as the iPhone.
