Can you imagine living without GPS systems? I can’t. And that’s saying something because I do remember when we had to live without them. Of course, you can’t miss something that you never had, so not having GPS wasn’t something that bothered me. I suppose I could go back to reading maps. But I sure wouldn’t want to.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. Over the past couple of decades GPS has evolved from a military targeting and navigation system, to experimental gadgets for geeks, to an indispensable technology that has integrated itself into our daily lives.

Of course, it was only natural that GPS systems would become a part of navigating our way on the roads. Not that long ago, a road atlas could be found in every car. Remember those AAA Trip-Tiks (a custom-made strip map for your road trip)? Those items are a thing of the past as even the most basic four-wheelers have built-in navigation systems. Today’s high end auto GPS systems even route you around traffic jams and warn you of construction. Tomorrow’s systems will be talking to each other, with the GPS units in cars ahead of you signaling back to your car that they are slowing down ahead.

Of GPS isn’t always perfect. More than once I have sat idling next to an empty field while my GPS resolutely repeats “You have reached your destination.” Maybe the GPS units of the next generation could come with a camera so they could see what I see and maybe reconsider.

One of my favorite features on a GPS is probably one of the simplest. I like the arrival time display. Whenever someone at my destination begins to wonder when I will arrive and calls me on my cell phone, I can announce with a reasonable degree of certainty, “I will be there at 8:13!” I’ll admit I couldn’t do that without a map.

So I suppose these new-fangled gadgets are here to stay. In fact, they are well on their way to becoming standard equipment for trips of any length. Even if you believe you’d rather pass on this tech marvel, you should probably try it out. You may find that you enjoy having a little more direction in your life.

It hasn’t taken very long for GPS units to become standard equipment in most vehicles. The technology itself and the satellite network that makes it work are not that new. But until a few years ago, GPS units were pretty much limited to use by hobbyists, hikers and military commanders. Now you can’t sling a dead PDA without hitting something that has GPS capabilities. From cars to phones, everything is geared to helping you find things or enabling others to find you.

As I mentioned, most new cars come with a GPS built right in to the dash, or at least an option for one. But what if you are like me-still driving vehicles that were built before the GPS explosion? The two most important are how often are you going to use it and where will you be using it most?

How often do you think you plan to use your new GPS? I know that’s a difficult question to answer since you’re not using one at all right now. For example, if you normally drive to and from work every day and only rarely take road trips or travel to new destinations, you would probably be perfectly happy with a low end model that mounts with a suction cup and plugs into your lighter. When you’re not using it, you can just toss it into the center console or dashboard. But if you are an outside salesperson going to new addresses every day, then you might want a higher-end, more permanent solution.

Do you live in the heart of an urban area, or are you located well away from the city in a rural area? If you’re a city dweller, then you should consider purchasing a GPS that includes traffic data. Traffic information is usually available on a subscription basis. Your traffic-enabled GPS can query the system regarding local slowdowns or road closures and route you around those trouble spots. But if you live, work and travel in rural areas, there’s really no point in buying this capability because the information won’t be available for your area anyway.

They offer the low price without any of the perks that would naturally come along with buying a ‘new’ product. The things to watch out for are:

Are the maps for the GPS you are buying currently being supported? This is a big deal and should be the first question you ask your retailer. Sometimes a specific refurbished model will not have the support you would hope it might and you will have to pay for the latest version of your maps or simply be stuck with a map that is not able to be updated. This can be a real bummer and cut into the savings you received by going with a refurbed model.

Is there a warranty attached to your model? This is important because you don’t want to be left high and dry if your GPS malfunctions. Often times there is a warranty and it is exactly like the one offered on ‘new’ models, but asking will help you know for certain and stave off the possibility that they will try and screw you over.

Is the retailer you are talking to an authorized dealer? If they are not, the warranty on the unit could be voided. You obviously don’t want that to happen. An authorized dealer is simply someone who the manufacturer knows is selling there product and they have given them permission to. If they aren’t one of these dealers go find one that is.

When it comes down to it, you have to be willing to ask to questions to find out this information. If you are buying a refurbished product that has been released in the last 9 months or so then you will have a good chance that the map will be recent and that it will be supported. If it wasn’t than you are running the chance that you will have to be stuck with an old map or loose some of your savings in the upgrades.

When dealing with online retailers be sure that you still get the answers that you are seeking in email form. This will help you in any disputes if something were to go wrong and the retailer turns out to be less than entirely ethical. You can never go wrong with getting something in writing.

Indisputably, Garmin is the world’s biggest manufacturer of consumer gps and the name has almost become synonymous with the product. The company has a long and envious history of producing quality and versatile GPS. For example the Garmin StreetPilot c340 has a text to speech functionality. So you have the added advantage of hands free operation and then the ability to concentrate on the road whilst driving and not looking at the GPS display to see what is written there. This mode of operation can take complex commands such as Turn Right at Next Intersection. This feature is a big plus for people who need to keep looking ahead on the road whilst driving fast.
