Five Cool New Features in Windows 7

Sometimes there are huge leaps in development from one version of operating system to the next. For example, the move from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95 was a paradigm shift, as was the move from XP to Vista. The release of Windows 7 is a different type of update. Although visually the two operating systems are quite similar, Microsoft worked behind the scenes to implement user suggestions. Along the way they came up with some really cool features. Here are five that I like:

Shake off distractions. As I work, I usually end up with a whole lot of windows cluttering up my desktop. Sometimes there are so many that it starts to interfere with my concentration. Before Windows 7, I would usually end up closing the windows one-by-one, or minimizing them. Now, all I have to do is grab the header of the window in which I’m working and give it a gentle shake. Every other window on the screen obediently dives to the taskbar.

Jumplists. This is an excellent new feature that lets you view recently opened files sorted by application. All you have to do is right-click the application’s icon on the taskbar. You can also quickly open a favorite playlist without needing to start your media player

Better previews. Previewing was pretty good in Vista because you could hover over a minimized window and see a miniature preview. Windows 7 takes it a step farther. Hover over a minimized window and see the small preview. With groups, you see all the documents in a row (like if you have 8 Word documents open. You can close files from this preview by clicking on the “x” in the right top corner. If you hover over the small preview, you are rewarded with a full screen preview. Find the open file you want and click. Easy and efficient.

Snapping and resizing. I don’t know about you, but I hate finding the edge of a window with my cursor and the dragging to resize. Windows 7 has a better way. Grab a window and drag it to the left or right edge of your screen. It automatically snaps and resizes to half of your desktop. That’s a great way to view documents side-by-side. Or you can drag a window to the top of your screen and it will automatically maximize.

XP Virtual Mode. Do you have old program that are no longer updated but are still useful? Vista was pretty aloof to your troubles, simply letting you no your old program wouldn’t run. Under Windows 7, you can download XP Mode (for free) from Microsoft and then run your beloved software in a virtual XP environment within Windows 7.
