The main reason why the Mogan Dollar came to exist
The Morgan Silver Dollar is so named because of its designer George T Morgan. Mr Morgan had been a pupil of Mr William Wyen of the Royal Mint in London. He was picked by the United States Mint in 1878 to make a completely new one dollar silver coin (his initial M is on both sides of each Morgan 1903) The demand for the coin came about soon after the discovery of the Comstock Lode in Nevada. A group of silver mine owners got together and lobbied the U.S Congress to pass the Bland-Allison Act. This dictated that the US Treasury buy from them approximately between two and four million ounces of silver once per month. The U.S Treasury finished up receiving this monumental amount of silver monthly and sought for an effective way to use it. Its solution ended up being to commission a fresh coin. George T Morgan made it and production was started. The coin was produced in massive numbers throughout its run. The Morgan 1903 formed part of the over 500,000,000 Morgan dollars produced. 1921 saw the most produced, about 85 million were struck by the Philadephia, San Francisco and Denver mints at this time.

Nobody has proved capable of finding the 12,000 commercial strikes and of the 880 proof coins around 75 to 80 of these are known to exist. Because of this its value is pretty high, hence its name King of the Morgans.

A brief history of the life of George T Morgan

A brief history of the life of Anna Willess Williams after the Morgan Silver Dollar
Anna Willess Williams was a nineteen year old Philadelphia school teacher when she posed for Morgan. The motive for Morgan picking Anna Willess Williams to model for him was that from the beginning he had it in mind to utilize the likeness of an American girl (as opposed to that of an imaginary one) for his brand-new design. Shortly after rejecting several candidates, Morgan pleased with her profile, announced that it was the most perfect he had personally seen in England or America and so asked her to model for him. Morgan requested her to pose for the reason that he was working on engraving a half dollar at that time (the need for the Morgan 1903 only came after) She became famous and received many letters and personal visits which she found unsettling. Although she was offered profitable acting jobs, she turned these down and stayed in the education profession for the rest of her life. She remained single (despite the fact that there were rumors of a future spouse at one time) and died in Philadelphia in April 1926 aged sixty eight.
